The Post Graduate Department of Personnel Management and Industrial Relations has the advantage of being a part of the great academic institution, Utkal University, which is the premier and mother university of the state of Odisha. The Department works with the objective of providing training through a well developed curriculum to deal with the problems and challenges of managing and developing human resource in organizations. The Department endeavours to develop professional HR managers  for the corporate sector and public system, through its well designed two-year regular Management Program, Master in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (MPM&IR).

The Department also offers M. Phil and Ph. D. Degrees in Personnel management and Industrial Relations aiming to equip its students for application and dissemination of knowledge in the field of research, teaching and training covering the entire business gamut. Our students are our strength and alumni are our guiding light. The department proves its worth through the excellence, achieved by its products.

The department has maintained its rich legacy by adopting innovative learning process and encouraging its students to initiate and drive various activities that hones their creativity, leadership and develops them as socially sensitive and ethical HR professionals. The department maintains its uniqueness by redesigning its course curriculum prioritising the suggestion given by the Advisory Council in every two years. The department leaves no stone turned to maintain and promote professional excellence.

1970 - The department took its birth as the Department of Sociology and Labour Welfare under the headship of Prof. Bidyadhar Mishra, the former Vice-Chancellor of  Utkal University

1974- It took its rebirth as an independent department, i.e. Department of Labour Welfare under the leadership of Prof Abhay Kumar.

1982- The nomenclature of the department got changed to Personnel Management and Labour Welfare

1997- Due to the need of time and on the recommendation of the advisory board, it was renamed as department of Personnel Management & Industrial Relations

Classroom:

The department has three air-conditioned smart classrooms for imparting education.

Computer Facilities

The Department has a well furnished Computer Lab with internet facility for the use of its students and teachers.

Library Facilities:

Besides the Parija Library, the Central Library of the University, the Department has its own library with 3621 reference and text books for the lending and reference of faculty members and students. The Department also subscribes newspapers, periodicals and journals of national and international repute to keep update the students and teachers.

Reading Room

The Department has a well furnished reading room, used by the teachers & students with about 1162 books for reference.

Hostels:

Hostel accommodation in the campus is provided to all the eligible students of the department.

The Department has a well furnished Computer Lab with internet facility for the use of its students and teachers.

The department organizes National/International seminars regularly on 2nd Saturday and Sunday of every year since 2011 on different contemporary topics of HR and IR fields which are actively participated by more than 300 academicians, executives, research scholars and students from various parts of the country.

Professor Abhay Kumar Memorial Lecture

As a tribute, the department has been organizing Professor Abhay Kumar Memorial Lecture in the memory of Late Prof. Abhay Kumar, the founder Professor of the Department since 2010. Eminent personalities are invited for deliberation to commemorate his contribution to the Department.

On this occasion, each year the Department felicitates the achiever alumni and offers Prof. Abhay Kumar Memorial Medal to the Topper of MPMIR.

The department intermittently organizes workshops on various topics of IR, Labour Laws and allied matters. The resource persons are invited from industries, unions and enforcement offices of state & central govt. labour services.

Faculty Development Programme

The department conducts faculty development programme on contemporary issues and new developments in the field of HR/IR/Labour Laws/Research Methodolgy. Resource persons from Industries, Central & State Labour services and eminent academicians from the university deliberate on various topics . Faculties from different universities and business school attend the FDP.

The department has conducted a 7 days FDP on the topic "Industrial Relations Laws" attended by 20 participants from different universities and institutions. Management Development Programme

The department offers Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for executives at all levels. The MDPs are well designed to provide conceptual and experiential learning to the participants. The pedagogy of the system is participatory with an approach to blend the experience of working professionals with the updated inputs from the academicians in the fields. The experts for the program mainly comprises of in-house faculty members as well as industry practitioners.

Student Activities:

The department encourages students to drive academic and professional initiatives to compliment the class room learning with practical aspects of the real business world.

Co-curricular Activities:

  • Subject Seminars

  • The department organizes classroom/subject seminars on relevant topics taught in the respective papers by inviting subject matter experts from industries/universities to expose them to various practical dimensions of the topic

  • Corporate Talks

  • Corporate talks are held once in a month for students to enrich their insights about various HR interventions adopted in business organizations.

  • Student Seminars

  • Seminars on various topics are held once in a week, i.e., on each Saturday. A group of students present seminar papers in on emerging and relevant topics of HR and IR. Both students and faculty members participate in the seminar activites.

  • Business Quizzes:

  • The department conducts business quizzes comprising the basic management concepts, current affairs, HR Jargons and terminologies. The sole objective behind this activity is to keep abreast the students about the current happenings of the socio-economic and business scenario of the world.

  • Group Discussion/Extempore:

  • Students are encouraged to participate in group discussions and extempore conducted by the department on various relevant topics of business and economy, that not only helps in developing their communication skills but also improves their analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Industrial Tours

  • Regular industrial tours are conducted in order to expose students to industrial arena and to earn firsthand knowledge in HR/IR practices by interacting with the corporate executives.

Extra-curricular Activities:

  • Cultural Activities:

  • The Department is proud of its students who excel in dance, literature and other allied fields. Musical concerts, plays and other cultural programmes are organized by the students during the annual function, celebrated regularly. Inter-departmental competitions are held on debate, business quiz, etc. to promote creativity of students. Students participate in different B-school competitions and win prizes regularly.

  • Welcome and Farewell Functions:

  • Welcome and farewell functions are customarily celebrated by the students of the department as a warm gesture to both the seniors and juniors.

  • Picnic

  • Each year the department organizes picnic as a part of socialization programme which is participated by all the students and teachers.

  • Sports:

  • The department promotes sportsmanship among students who are District, University, State and National level players in various games namely; Cricket, Football, Table Tennis & Chess etc. The departmental cricket team is unique to bring excellence to the department every year.
