Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archoelogy

The P.G. Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology was established in the year 1996 on the recommendation of the 8th Plan of the UGC visiting team 1990 to create opportunities for teaching and higher research in art, archaeology and culture of India. The founding faculty members were Prof. K. S. Behera, Prof. A. N. Parida and Dr. Sanjay Acharya. Prof. K. S. Behera, a renowned historian was the founding head of the Department. He was awarded the prestigious Indira Gandhi Memorial National Fellowship and was the Vice Chancellor of F.M.University. Prof.A.N.Parida of the Department was the President of the 30th Session of the Odisha History Congress. Thereafter Prof. S. Pradhan carried on the mantle of taking the Department to new heights and was invited to deliver the key note address in the Rock Art Summit held in Yangshoo, China. In order to popularize the subject, the Department has instituted special lecture programme on art and archaeology, conducted refresher courses, seminars and photo exhibition with a view to create awareness in the society. Further in the year 2007 the UGC Innovative Course of Master's in Tourism and Heritage Management (MTHM) was introduced.

Courses Outline

History of India from 6th C.B.C. to 1200 A.D., Principles and Methods of Archeology, Application of Science in Archaeology, Prehistory, Proto History in India, World Civilizations, Social and cultural History of India upto 1200 A.D., Heritage of Indian Architecture, Indian Art and Iconography, Practical Training in Methods of Exploration and Excavation for a period of three weeks and Project Report, Economic History of India upto 1200 A.D., Heritage of Odishan Art and Architecture, Visit to Monuments for on the spot study for two week and submission of field report for evaluation, Heritage of Odishan Art and Archaeology, Heritage of Odishan Temple Art and Architecture, Structural Conservation and Chemical Preservation of Monuments and Antiquites, History of Odisha from 3rd Century B.C. to 13th Century A.D., Odishan Sculptural Art, Iconography and Painting, Indian Epigraphy and Numismatics, Dissertation on any aspect of Art, Archaeology & Monuments of Odisha.

Presently the Department is the only of its type in the state to impart knowledge on art, architecture and archaeology. It has carried on excellent research work and has also produced more than 20 numbers of UGC and ICHR-JRF. The Department has an excellent seminar library. It regularly conducts archaeological exploration and excavations, where the students are imparted practical training in the methods of archaeology. Field visits to monuments and sites are conducted for on the spot study. The revised syllabus is as per the UGC guidelines based on the CBCS pattern. In 2012 Narisho, an early historical site was excavated under the aegis of this Department. It completed two projects entitled Survey and Documentation of Lesser known Monuments at Puri and at Bhubaneswar being sponsored by the INTACH, Bhubaneswar Chapter. It also completed another major research project on Documentation of Monuments in Odisha sponsored by IGNCA, New Delhi. The Department organized one National seminar on Buddhist Heritage of Odisha and collaborated with Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha in another International seminar on Buddhism and Tourism. It regularly assists the UGC Academic Staff College in organizing Refresher courses in History for the benefit of College Teachers. The Department collaborates with organisations at the state and national level i.e. Archaeological Survey of India (Bhubaneswar Circle and Excavation Branch IV), Odishan Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies, Bhubaneswar, Odisha State Archaeology, Odisha State Museum, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, Odisha Chapter, Indira Gandhi National Centre of Arts, New Delhi and others in terms of field archaeology, display of sculptures and antiquities, visit to monuments, sites and projects. The Department also offers Allied Elective and Free Elective Courses under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) which are opted by students of History, Anthropology and Sanskrit Departments.
